Fall 2020 Advising Updates and Information

In order to provide support to students during this time, please review the information below.

Continuing Students: 

Examples of types of questions that should be directed to our peer adviser chat hours: 

  • Quick Questions
  • Brief explanations or clarifications of BSOE policies or processes
  • Academic Planning Questions- If you have a form that requires an academic plan, or are being asked to submit a signed academic plan to a campus office, please work with a peer adviser on creating and reviewing an academic plan first. 
  • Time Sensitive Issues - We may not always be able to address matters immediately regardless of urgency, but contacting our peer advisers is the quickest way to connect with our office 

 BSOE Peer Advisers will be assisting students on a first come, first served basis during their Peer Adviser Chat Hours.

Matters for staff advisers:

  • If you need a signature on a form, such as for Fall 2020 enrollment, financial aid, Petitions to Extend Enrollment or Part- Time Final Quarter forms, please send email (with a filled-out form attached) to bsoeadvising@ucsc.edu
  • Unfortunately, we won’t be able to schedule one on one appointments with students to do general academic planning at this time. Our Peer Advisers are available to do limited academic planning during the chat hours linked above.
  • Students with non time-sensitive advising questions, such as declarations of minors, may see delays in response time or appointment availability.
  • Students who have another type of advising need should send email to bsoeadvising@ucsc.edu. In the body of the email, please be sure to indicate succinctly what your request is. It is important that we understand what your advising need is so that we can address or refer appropriately.

We will make our best efforts to respond to emails as quickly as possible. However, some responses may take 3-5 business days, depending on the volume of messages received and the type of question or request. We may not always be able to respond to your question within 24 hours regardless of urgency. Please do not send repeated emails in hopes of receiving a faster response.

Our business hours are Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm. We may not be responding to emails outside of that time.

New First-Year Students:

How to get major advising questions answered: Unfortunately, we won’t be able to schedule one on one appointments with students to do academic planning or major exploration. Our Peer Advisers are available to answer questions via Google Chat.  They are also available to do limited academic planning to get you through your first two years. The Peer Adviser Chat Hours and information on how to chat can be found here.

If you have a question that you are emailing to our office instead we will make our best efforts to respond as quickly as possible. However, some responses may take 3-5 business days, depending on the volume of messages received and the type of question or request. We may not always be able to respond to your question within 24 hours regardless of urgency.
