Advising Updates and Information

Baskin Undergraduate Advising is currently remote.

Please review the information below for more information about how to receive advising support from BSOE Undergraduate Advising and timelines for common requests.

Thank you for your patience.

Continuing Students:

Examples of types of questions that should be directed to our peer adviser chat hours:

  • Quick Questions
  • Brief explanations or clarifications of BSOE policies or processes
  • Academic Planning Questions- If you have a form that requires an academic plan, or are being asked to submit a signed academic plan to a campus office, please work with a peer adviser on creating and reviewing an academic plan first.
  • Time Sensitive Issues - We may not always be able to address matters immediately regardless of urgency, but contacting our peer advisers is the quickest way to connect with our office

BSOE Peer Advisers will be assisting students on a first come, first served basis during their Peer Adviser Chat Hours.

The Peer Adviser Chat Hours and information on how to chat can be found here

Other Advising Needs: Students who have another type of advising need should send email to: bsoeadvising@ucsc.edu. In the body of the email, please be sure to indicate succinctly what your request is. It is important that we understand what your advising need is so that we can address or refer appropriately.

We will make our best efforts to respond to emails as quickly as possible. However, some responses may take longer, depending on the volume of messages received and the type of question or request. Our business hours are Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm. We may not be responding to emails outside of that time.

We may not always be able to respond to any type of question within 24 hours regardless of urgency.

Please do not send repeated emails in hopes of receiving a faster response.

Please see below for the timelines for some common types of requests that may take longer so that you can plan accordingly.

  • Appointments: Due to the high ratio of students attempting to reach our office to advisors, we are currently unable to have open appointment availability as we need to prioritize to ensure that students with critical needs are able to receive advising. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to schedule one on one appointments with students to do general academic planning, class selection, graduation/progress checks, or declaration of minor at this time.  (Please see above for information about speaking to a BSOE Peer Adviser for questions about general academic planning.)

  • Forms: If you need a signature on a form, such as for Winter 2021 enrollment, financial aid, Petitions to Extend Enrollment or Part- Time Final Quarter forms, please send email (with a filled-out form attached) to bsoeadvising@ucsc.edu

    • Petitions to Extend: Up to 2 weeks. If there is an active hold on your enrollment or Financial Aid please let us know so that we can prioritize.

    • Part-time Final Quarter Approval: Up to 2 weeks

    • Department Petitions (Course Substitution, Waiver or Exception to Policy, Course Elsewhere): 2-4 week turnaround

    • Independent Studies: 1 week turnaround

  • Signed Academic Plans for Veterans Benefits Verification or for Declaration of a Major or Minor outside of BSOE:  2 week turnaround

  • BSOE Minor Declaration: 2 week turnaround

  • Graduation Requirement Checks: 3-4 week turnaround

  • Spring 2021 Readmission Plans: We are now past our deadline for signing BSOE Readmission plans for Spring 2021

  • Fall 2021 Readmission Plans: 1-2 week turnaround  (Appeals or petition approval may be required, so we recommend reaching out 4-6 weeks before the deadline)
