Earth Day Teach-In & Climate Rally 4/22



UCSC has a number of things going on (some recent updates can be found on the Sustainability Office site):


  1. 4/2: IndigeFest: Celebrating Indigenous Cultures of the Americas, 12 - 3 pm at UCSC Quarry Amphitheater


  1. 4/4 5:30 pm Virtual Talk: “#We Chose Now: Climate Justice from the Southern Frontlines,” a conversation with Colette Battle on the impacts of climate change on the southern Gulf Coast states, and climate activism that’s making a difference.


  1. 4/8-10: UCSC’s Sustainability Office’s big collaborative event,  Inter-Org (last year's info). This year it will be April 8, 9 and 10. Here are all Sustainability Office events. And other events on Upcoming Campus and Community Events.


  1. Thursday, April 21, 6-7:30 PM: Responding to the Impacts of Climate Change in Santa Cruz County (Public Faculty Panel, Virtual)
    1. Please join us for a deep dive into climate impacts on the central coast and around the world. UC Santa Cruz scientists and community leaders in conservation, climate resilience, and sustainability will explore the local and global challenges brought on by a warming world, discuss ways we all can adapt and mitigate the impacts of a changing climate, and respond to questions from the audience.

  2. An "Earth Week" of student-facing activities (programs, workshops) sponsored by one of our residential colleges, Rachel Carson College (contact: James Brunette of the Rachel Carson College Student Council,; and


  1. 4/22: On Earth Day itself (Fri 4/22), a morning of (public) Teach-ins, tabling, and (in the afternoon) a climate/environmental justice rally/march (followed by more talks, music, etc) -- these organized by UCSC's new student-faculty-staff Climate Coalition.  We have asked faculty to “teach the climate” (no matter their course) for 5 minutes or 50 minutes (whatever they can manage), and to open their classroom doors to non-class members who might be interested in that particular subject.  Over 20 faculty (and a few students and community members) are giving talks and workshops on subjects ranging from glacier melt in Antarctica to racism’s role in environmental injustices to resisting “Cyborg” denialism.   1. Saturday, April 23, 10 AM-2 PM: Climate Action Market (In Person)
    1. Learn about the science happening to understand the impacts of climate change on the oceans and our local coastal climate. Booths will be filled with scientists, civic partners, community organizations, and businesses sharing what they're doing to understand and/or act to achieve healthy marine, coastal ecosystems, and human communities.
