Open Source Research Experience Summer 2021 Program accepting proposals
Proposals from undergraduate students are now being accepted for the Summer 2021 OSRE Program. Deadline for Student Applications is April 30.
Interested students should check out our ideas page and contact the relevant mentors before finalizing their application.
For Summer 2021, the Center for Research in Open Source Software (CROSS) is seeking undergraduates interested in working on open source software projects at UC Santa Cruz. CROSS has created a list of project ideas that can be used as a basis for student project proposals. The goal of this program is to increase student capabilities in working in open source projects, add productive contributors to on-going projects, and further promote open source at UC Santa Cruz.
CROSS values diversity and inclusion in all our projects. We invite students from traditionally underrepresented groups in tech and open source communities to apply to this program. Due to the open source nature of all CROSS projects, contributions are welcomed from both UC Santa Cruz and non-UC Santa Cruz students.

Public Health Pathogen Genomics at UCS
Driven by new SARS-CoV-2 virus variants, COVID-19 is surging once again. If you are a software developer with experience in computational analysis, data visualization, or computational biology, you can do something about it.
The UC Santa Cruz Genomics Institute is organizing a project called Public Health Pathogen Genomics. We vow to get genomics tools in the hands of public health officials who will use them to recognize new variants of the virus and take action.
To be a part of this effort please contact Linda Rosewood (rosewood@ucsc.edu) to learn more about joining our team!

The Uses and Abuses of Data in Higher Education

How is the use of institutional data-gathering reshaping higher education? From surveillance software to student success dashboards, from COVID tracking to instructor productivity metrics, “data-informed decision making” is pervading all levels of academic life. Who decides which data we collect, who will have access to those data, and how the data will be used? Should institutional data literacy be part of the training of all academics? This conference takes a broad look at the explosive growth of data in higher education in the past decade and how we, as members of the university community, can be better informed about how our data is being used, and to what ends.
