BSOE Advising Temporary ClosureDear BSOE Students:
The Baskin School of Engineering is welcoming a large incoming frosh and transfer class for Fall 2018. In summer we will need to prioritize our time in order to prepare for their orientation and enrollment.
The Undergraduate Affairs Office will be closed from Monday, July 9 - Friday, August 3. We apologize for the inconvenience but look forward to reopening on Monday, August 6.
Students who have an urgent advising need should send email to advising@soe.ucsc.edu and indicate in the subject line that it’s urgent, and a date that your request is needed by. In the body of the email please indicate succinctly what your request is and why it’s urgent. We will try to accommodate any reasonable urgent requests.
We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.
Sincerely,
The BSOE Undergraduate Affairs Office

Social Computing Reading Groups in the Tech4Good LabThe Tech4Good lab is organizing reading groups for anyone interested in exploring social computing. This is a great way to understand how computation can be applied to the design of large-scale social systems (useful for both research and product design).
The reading groups will be carried out in two 4-week parts (the second is optional) with groups available to meet at both the main UCSC campus or the Silicon Valley extension in Santa Clara (you do not need to be enrolled in the academic summer session to participate). The first phase will be between July 2 - July 27 and the second phase, August 6 - 31. At the end of phase one, you decide if you want to stick around for phase two or not. In each of the phases there are two types of groups: exploration and ideation. The exploration groups will be broad, aimed at building intuition for user-centered or mathematical social computing research. While the ideation group will be focused, aimed at iterating and refining a specific research idea.
The time commitment is low: each part requires reading and summarizing one paper, and attending one-hour meetings each week. The benefit is great: you get to explore a bunch of papers that others are summarizing for you, build relationships with other passionate students, and stretch your imagination!
The first meeting is an information and group formation meeting.
Main Campus Meeting: Friday, July 6th from 6:00pm to 7:30pm
Silicon Valley Meeting: TBD

Volunteer Web Help at ArboetumThe Arboretum & Botanic Garden has a website revitalization project underway. They are expanding their web presence through more engaging content, and are navigating how to have a seamless experience for users. Much like an alumni membership page, they are even building up a community hub for members and volunteers to interact with them. This new integrated website will roll out as early as September 2018.
They are looking for a Computer Science student to volunteer as a "Website Master" or "Website Manager." 2-3 hours weekly (average) with additional hours for training purposes.
The platforms they use are WCMS and iModules. Contact:
