Baskin Day is a celebration of Baskin Engineering and its students. This event will feature workshops, seminars, lab tours, and other exciting events to recognize the work of fellow slugs. We are looking for enthusiastic and passionate students to join our planning committee to organize our third annual event. We welcome all majors, not just engineers. We are currently in the process of expanding Baskin Day. We plan on hosting multiple events throughout the year to stay engaged with the SOE community.
Roles we are looking for the following role:
Scheduling the layout of the events
Finding and presenting at various funding sources and helping create a list of our expenses

Outreach to companies and network with professionals

We're a group of graduates currently working on an exciting full stack web application that could be monetized down the road. The website aims to help student and early career professionals decide on different career paths within the Tech Industry.
We are looking for people who are interested in learning to apply their programming/design skills to materialize an idea into an actual real product that will be used by many people, which will also be a huge resume booster of course.

Positions available for undergraduate students who would like to work as reader/tutor in STAT007-2 (Fall term). It is required that applicants have taken and passed the class before. Focused ultrasound (FUS) is a revolutionary non-invasive medical therapy. It sends harmless sound waves from outside of body to create a focal therapy point, with over 130 conditions in the body, including but not limited to oncology, neurology, neurosurgery, and more. We, at YektaSonics, are developing a novel hardware-software co-designed phased array to be used in focused ultrasound medical devices. The technology is an order of magnitude lower cost in compare to other phased arrays in the market, and it has the most optimum output signaling of pure sine or harmonic free (beneficial to the FUS community due to MRI compatibility and power efficiency to transducers). YektaSonics has received many awards and recognitions, such as being a company in residence at University of California Citris Foundry incubator, UC Big Ideas finalist, NSF I-Corps recommended team, and being invited to NSF SBIR for proposal submission.
We have a software intern position for this summer, where a strong candidate will develop our package as well as contributing to our machine operating system. The work will be done mainly in C/C++. We are currently seeking CS undergraduates to participate in a video game study. Our study examines how Data-Driven Retrospective Interviewing (DDRI) can help generate insightful feedback from video game players.
Eligible participants will be asked to play four levels of a programming game and then complete a 15-30 minute interview. During the interview, participants will be asked questions regarding their gameplay data. Upon completion of the play session and the interview process, participants will be compensated with a $50 gift card.
You can participate in this study if you are at least 18 years of age and able to read and speak English. You must be a registered student enrolled in an undergraduate CS program and you must have access to a Windows computer. Running Windows on a Mac or Linux machine will not suffice it must be a Windows machine.

The Tech4Good Lab is seeking 3 undergraduate students to assist a PhD student on various aspects of a developing research project in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Social Computing. Undergraduate students will be working on various tasks as need, including but not limited to, testing the study design, and reading and summarizing relevant literature. No experience necessary to apply, just an interest in the project topic, ability to work independently, and eagerness to learn. This is a great opportunity if you've ever been curious about HCI research. Expected time commitment is 10hrs/week. The advance of technology and the COVID-19 pandemic have resulted in an increase of workers who are turning to working on gig platforms to make ends meet. Positions available for undergraduate students who'd like to work as readers/graders in STAT80A or STAT131 (Fall term). It's a requirement that applicants have taken and passed the class before, and it will be a plus if the student knows how to program in R. We expect each of the students to help with grading class assignments, for around 6h a week for a total of 60h throughout the term. The students will also meet with the TAs, other graders and/or the instructor on a regular basis, to ensure that the grading process progresses well. Meetings will take place early in the morning (between 8 and 10 am PDT); the student should be ready to adapt to that schedule. Fall Opportunities in the Tech4Good Lab
The Tech4Good Lab has several positions open next quarter for undergraduate students from all majors. We are looking for people who are extremely responsible, love learning, and have a strong drive to apply technology for social good. For next quarter, we have positions doing the following types of work:
- User research: interviewing users and analyzing interviews to understand user needs and context,
- Usability evaluation: conducting evaluations of interfaces for usability,
- Interface design: designing and iterating on web interfaces in Figma,
- Web development: coding an app within an Angular/NgRx/Firebase stack,
- DevOps: building tools to support developers and operations across lab projects,
- Multiagent RL: understanding and designing economic systems using multiagent reinforcement learning,
- NLP: use natural language processing techniques to identify topics and evaluate similarity,
You would be contributing to a variety of projects in the lab related to designing systems to better support the future of education, work, and community engagement. Some of the apps we are developing include:
- Helping connect with community leaders to establish an ecosystem connecting learning on campus to community projects (see Santa Cruz Tech Beat article),
- An app aimed at scaling apprenticeship learning, which supports people in learning through micro-roles while supporting non-profits as they learn,
- An app aimed at microlearning through small groups to create learning environments supporting curiosity, creativity, and relationships,
- An app containing short activities for team/group community building, and also creating "small group networks" that can facilitate interesting collective goals,
- An app aimed at supporting students in setting career goals and studying conversational interfaces for group mentorship from professionals,
Joining requires a commitment of 10 hours/week for the quarter for independent study credits. The CSE Department is seeking an editor for its new monthly undergraduate newsletter that we plan to start.
The goal of the newsletter is to provide information on CSE events, information for undergraduates, job / research openings, and more.
The ideal editor has experience in email newsletters, graphic formatting, and creative writing, and has a keen interest in student issues/life at SOE. The editor will solicit content from student organizations, faculty, and advising staff; format the newsletter, meet with the department chair or vice-chair as each issue is finalized, and produce email and pdf versions of the newsletter. The position is compensated at $20/hour, for 20 hours / month (or 5 hours / week on average).

Climate Change Analyst (link to job posting) – This is a six-month temporary position for someone with interest in climate data management and analysis. This position will focus on data collection, management and analysis for the annual citywide greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory; assisting with municipal and community climate policy and programming work; policy and project implementation; and facilitating and supporting stakeholder engagement.
The position requires a relevant four-year degree and one year of experience with climate program data management and analysis. It pays $6,195 – $7,529 per month. The announcement closes on 8/30/21 at 9:00 a.m.

Graders will be responsible for grading programs and reading program design documents. We are looking for students who are detail-oriented, conscientious, and punctual. We really do care about the quality of grading.
Tutors are expected to hold tutoring sessions. We need people who are good at communicating with others, and are confident in their ability to explain core concepts. Note that explaining concepts does not entail providing students with code solutions, as that is detrimental to their education.
Steps for the Student Applicant
- Log in to the Reader Tutor Application (RTA) system using your CruzID and Blue password.
- Submit your application. You will receive an email confirming that you have applied. An application is not a guarantee of employment.
- If your application is approved, you will receive a formal offer of employment via email. You must accept the formal offer in the RTA system within two days.
- After accepting the offer, you will receive an acknowledgment notice with instructions to complete employment paperwork.
- You are not permitted to begin working before completing the required employment forms and work authorization documents.

ITS Learning Technologies are hiring student consultants to help staff the computer labs and libraries on campus.
The ideal candidate has an interest in technology and an eagerness to support our campus community. We are looking for individuals with good communication skills and customer service combined with technical knowledge of computer systems and programs commonly used throughout campus. The ability to teach computer skills to novice users is required as well as the ability to assist professors/TAs to ensure the smooth operation of classes or sections that are held in the computer labs.

David Duncan is a PhD Candidate of History here at UCSC. He is looking for help from within the UCSC community, to develop a website for a project he is working on through The Humanities Institute here on campus.
"I am an oral historian, focused on interviewing people that lived through historical moments and then presenting their memory in many different ways. My Master’s was focused on the Sausalito School District, which in 1965 became one of the first districts in the US to desegregate without a court order.
My project through THI is focused on the present, where the same district received the first court-ordered desegregation in California in over 50 years. I am currently in the field taking pictures, video, and audio on the two school campuses, but I am only one person. I and the school superintendent are looking to develop a website where students, faculty, and parents, can submit testimony, or oral history, about their school experience on a website via audio, video, text, image, etc. These submissions would then become part of a photo essay that I am making about the district’s desegregation effort in the present.
There is also interest in developing a digital archive/exhibit of sorts but the self-submission website is the priority at the moment."
