Full Stack Web App Opportunity for Programmers/Designers
We're a group of graduates currently working on an exciting full stack web application that could be monetized down the road. The website aims to help student and early career professionals decide on different career paths within the Tech Industry.
We are looking for people who are interested in learning to apply their programming/design skills to materialize an idea into an actual real product that will be used by many people, which will also be a huge resume booster of course.
Currently looking for a programmer who is fluent in Python: preferably have web scraping experiences, it's ok if you don't. (Selenium, Beautiful Soup)
Currently looking for ui/ux designers who have experience working on Rapid Prototyping projects: designing low/hi-fi designs, conducting user research, and usability testing, etc.
If you're interested in the above positions or just want to learn more, email team@pathfinder.fyi with your resume (portfolio too if you're a designer).
Competitive Programming Club for UCSC
Hi everyone,
My name is Nhan Nguyen, and I'm a sophomore here at UCSC. My proposed major is Computer Science: Computer Game Design. I have been programming since I was in 9th grade, and I have a deep passion for this subject.
For the past 2 years, I have been very devoted to a field in Computer Science called Competitive Programming (CP for short). Throughout the course of 2 years, Competitive Programming help me explore many programming techniques and algorithms that catapult my programming skills to the next level (to name a few simple ones: Binary Search, Two Pointers, DP). As my skills steadily improve, I found myself in many different coding contest from large companies like Google, Facebook, etc (my most recent one being Facebook Hacker Cup). Being involved in the Competitive Programming community for a long time also exposes me to a very prestigious contest called ICPC ( https://icpc.global/), and from there I realized that one of my biggest dreams is to compete in the ICPC.
So I got to work looking for a UCSC club that covers the topic, and I was disappointed to find that our campus lacks such a club. Since UCSD and most UCs has such a club and we don’t, I have decided to try and start a new club that specializes in Competitive Programming here at UCSC. The end goal of this club is to prepare fellow programmers to participate in the once-in-a-lifetime ICPC contest, and maybe compete in other prestigious contests like Facebook Hacker Cup or Google Codejam.
I am looking for advisors and executive members for this club. If you are interested in Competitive Programming and want to support what I'm doing or being an executive/advisor in general, please message me through my UCSC email: nhtrnguy@ucsc.edu, or you could join the clubs' discord here at: https://discord.gg/aw8EqPCbWy
P.S: If you don't know what Competitive Programming is you can see this video for reference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueNT-w7Oluw&t=1s
Interested in AI or Natural Language Processing? Consider Enrolling in CSE 143
Are you interested in Language, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning? Natural Language Processing is a rapidly growing, dynamic field with thousands of jobs in the Bay Area. Due to the huge interest in the field, we have recently added CSE 143 "Introduction to Natural Language Processing" to the Fall 2021 schedule. More information about the course is available on the UCSC Class Schedule.
CSE 143 is also recommended for UCSC's Natural Language Processing Professional Master's program, which will be accepting applications for Fall 2022 admission consideration when applications open on October 1st, 2021. The deadline to apply is February 15th, 2022. More information about the NLP MS program is available on our website: grad.soe.ucsc.edu/nlp
Please feel welcome to contact the NLP Program Team at nlp@ucsc.edu if you have any questions about CSE 143 or the NLP MS program.

Tech Industry Mentors Pilot Program
The Tech4Good Lab is in the early stages of establishing a program to connect students with industry mentors who have diverse careers within the tech industry, e.g. design, user research, software engineering, customer experience, etc.
We are looking for students to participate in a pilot program, where you will be placed in a group of students with two industry mentors for three 60 minute mentorship sessions, roughly once a month. If you would like to learn more about different paths in tech, receive career advice, and network with like-minded students, then this might be a good fit for you!
The mentorship sessions will occur through a chat platform designed for group mentorship, where you will interact with the mentor and with other students. We will also separately reach out to ask if you would like to participate in a research study on this program, but you do NOT have to participate in the research study to participate in the pilot program.
If you would like to participate, please fill out the Tech Industry Mentors Pilot Program Signup Form. If you have any questions, send an email to David Lee (dlee105@ucsc.edu).
Fall '21 Strategic Consulting Skill-Building Groups
Are you looking to learn about strategic consulting in a collaborative, project-oriented environment with other students? Want to understand how to conduct a landscape analysis for a local non-profit using business frameworks like SWOT, PEST, and techniques for analyzing interviews?
Join the strategic consulting skill-building groups hosted by the Tech4Good Lab! No prior knowledge is expected - all students are encouraged to join! We know you're busy, so the skill-building groups are extremely light. You'll only need to commit to two 90-minute work sessions each week for 4 weeks and you'll get to learn with a small group of peers :)
This is also the first time we're running it, so we're going to be doing a research study to understand and improve the learning experience and to help us improve the platforms we are developing to support learning. If you want information on how to join, fill out the skill-building group interest form and we'll reach out to you at the beginning of Fall quarter! Feel free to send us an email if you have any questions.
Looking forward to learning with you!

Join Slugbotics!
Slugbotics is a UCSC student-led robotics club that focuses on hands-on robotics design and fabrication. We design underwater ROVs for the MATE robotics competition, self-driving 1/10 scale racecars for F1TENTH, and long range UAVs for CITRIS.
Slugbotics welcomes students of all majors and levels of experience. If directly working on the projects that we described above doesn't sound interesting to you, reach out to us and we can talk about branching into other areas of robotics, personal projects, and business/administrative roles.
This Fall quarter, we will hold “onboarding” classes, where we teach all the skills you need to contribute to the team, as a 3-unit university course (CRSN 151C). In Winter and Spring, we start designing our underwater ROV and programming the 1/10 scale racecar. You can join different sub-teams that focus on CAD, machining, electronics/PCB design, low-level systems, or advanced programming. Taking these courses is not needed to join the team, but can be a great way to learn new skills that can be applied to your own projects as well.
If you are interested in learning more about what we do, please check out our website, join our slack! We look forward to seeing you!

Help PhD Candidate to Develop a Website
David Duncan is a PhD Candidate of History here at UCSC. He is looking for help from within the UCSC community, to develop a website for a project he is working on through The Humanities Institute here on campus.
"I am an oral historian, focused on interviewing people that lived through historical moments and then presenting their memory in many different ways. My Master’s was focused on the Sausalito School District, which in 1965 became one of the first districts in the US to desegregate without a court order.
My project through THI is focused on the present, where the same district received the first court-ordered desegregation in California in over 50 years. I am currently in the field taking pictures, video, and audio on the two school campuses, but I am only one person. I and the school superintendent are looking to develop a website where students, faculty, and parents, can submit testimony, or oral history, about their school experience on a website via audio, video, text, image, etc. These submissions would then become part of a photo essay that I am making about the district’s desegregation effort in the present.
There is also interest in developing a digital archive/exhibit of sorts but the self-submission website is the priority at the moment."
If you are intere3sted in helping David, please reach him here: dtduncan@ucsc.edu.
