Fall Opportunities at NeurotechSC
Hi everyone,
We are the official Neurotechnology club at UCSC! We focus on project building and education covering the topics of brain-computer interaction, neuroscience, and AI, and every year we submit a project to the NeurotechX competition. This year our project will be using SSVEPs as a means to alternatively communicate through the input of visual responses.
Our five teams consist of hardware, machine learning, data, software, and publication. To get involved join our discord: https://discord.gg/fjgDDGfFGG or send us an email at neurotechsc@gmail.com.
Some more about our club, we received 1st place in the U.S. in the NeuroTechX Student Competition for a silent-speech interface that takes in user EMG signals from the jawline area and predicts if a user is thinking ‘yes’ or ‘no’ with 90% accuracy. If the subject interests you, we welcome you to connect with us at our weekly meetings, we usually meet Tuesdays at 7 pm so watch out on discord for updates on our next meeting!
P.S. Don’t forget to check us out on instagram: @neurotechsc or on linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/neurotechsc
Software Research Opportunity
Focused ultrasound (FUS) or "curing with sounds” is a revolutionary non-invasive medical therapy. It sends harmless sound waves to treat over 150 medical conditions, such as cancer treatment with no surgery or chemotherapy, and brain modulations without opening the skull, to name a few. We, at Yektasonics, are developing a novel hardware-software co-designed Phased Array to be used in Focused Ultrasound medical devices. We also plan to utilize our technology in other non-medical applications, where we recently shipped our single channel Power Module to a non-medical company.
Our technology is an order of magnitude lower cost, and it has performance breakthroughs. Yektasonics has received numerous awards/recognitions, such as the recent award from the UC Santa Cruz Chancellor at Launchpad 2022, being a company in residence at UC Berkeley Citris Foundry, a finalist of UC Big Ideas Competitions, a NSF I-Corps recommended team, ASU Venture Devils cohort member, and being part of American Heart Association.
We have an interesting and challenging Software Research position, where a strong candidate will contribute to our existing software or will develop new modules, such as Yektasonics Operating System, our end user package, our embedded computing interface, and more. The work will be done mostly in C/C++. The work is hosted at UC Santa Cruz BSOE. The candidate should enroll for research credits, and the hours can be paid later from our sale.
If you are interested, please email your resume as well as your transcript to Navid Gougol at ngougol@ucsc.edu, who is the CEO/Founder of Yektasonics and a doctorate student at UCSC. You can check out the company website for more information at www.yektasonics.com.

Declare your Baskin Engineering Major
Dear BE students,
If you are required to declare your major this quarter go here to start the process! If you are in your 6th quarter at UCSC, you need to start the major declaration process in Fall, even if you still have major qualification courses still in progress.
Please note that the last day to start the process is Wednesday, October 12, 2022!
Although the campus declaration of major deadline for fall is Friday, October 21, 2022, the declaration of major process in BE requires several steps including verification of your major qualification requirements which is why you must start the process earlier than the campus deadline.
Join Us for Season 5 of Diverse Voices!
Food will be provided for the in-person event on 10/18. We hope to see you around 4:30pm, with the event beginning at 5:00pm. Please register HERE

Now Open - The Science Coalition Fund It Forward Student Video Challenge!
Did you know UCSC is a member of The Science Coalition? Together with research universities across the country, we’re working to spread the word to Congress about why science matters—and we need your help!
The Science Coalition recently launched its annual Fund It Forward Student Video Challenge, which is a great opportunity for students and researchers on campus to get involved in science advocacy and earn cash prizes! The challenge is open now until October 17. The power of a great story can change the world, and now more than ever, it’s important we share the value of science to advocate for increased federal funding for research.
Cash prizes from $500 to $1,000 will be awarded to the top three graduate and undergraduate student winners, with an additional opportunity for finalists to earn more through the People’s Choice Award. You don’t have to be a scientist to enter—if you’re passionate about science, we want to hear from you. It’s time to fund it forward.
Enter today! More details can be found on the website, and questions can be directed to tsc@sciencecoalition.org.

Stats 4+1 Masters Program
Did you know the Statistics Department at the Baskin School of Engineering offers a 4 + 1 contiguous pathway program? The program allows highly qualified undergraduate students to get a leg up in graduate school and job applications and gain a deeper understanding of statistics and data science tools by jointly completing an undergraduate major and an M.S. degree in Statistical Science.
The pathway is open to students from a wide variety of majors, including computer science, technology management, economics, mathematics, and physics. Students must declare their interest in pursuing this contiguous pathway no later than their ninth quarter of study at UCSC, and more typically at the end of the sixth or seventh quarter of enrollment.
