BSOE Proposed Major Status Policy
Proposed Major Policy for First Year Students
As of Fall 2017, all first-time freshmen must become "proposed BSOE majors" before being allowed to declare a major in the Baskin School of Engineering.
In addition to being a proposed major, students must meet the Major Qualification Requirements for their intended major prior to being able to declare.
All students must declare a major by the major declaration deadline in their 6th quarter.
Please note that not all of the courses from the proposed major policy list (at the bottom of this page) are required for every School of Engineering major. Refer to your intended major's requirements for more information.
If you are interested in having your proposed major changed to a BSOE major, please submit your request on our Change of Proposed Major form.
What is a proposed major?
Being in Proposed Engineering major status allows students: to be connected to advising, receive pertinent communication, and gain access to enrolling in some required major courses.
In order to be eligible to declare a School of Engineering major at a later date, students must be listed as a proposed major in one of the following:
- Biomolecular Engineering & Bioinformatics
- Computer Engineering
- Computer Science: Computer Game Design
- Computer Science (B.A. or B.S.)*
- Electrical Engineering
Students pursuing Network and Digital Technology and Technology and Information Management are NOT required to be proposed in these majors in order to declare them.
* Admission to the Computer Science majors (B.A. and B.S.) is selective. The Computer Science majors at UCSC are impacted, and in order to pursue either of these majors, students must have been admitted to UCSC as a proposed Computer Science Major. Students not admitted as proposed Computer Science will not be able to pursue either of these majors.
Students who want to keep their proposed status as of their fourth quarter MUST pass Math 19A or 20A, and two additional BSOE classes from the following list within the first three quarters:
CHEM 1A- General Chemistry
CHEM 1B- General Chemistry
CSE 12(formerly CMPE 12)- Computer Systems & Assembly Language
CSE 13(formerly CMPE 13)- Computer Systems & C programming
CSE 16(formerly CMPE 16)- Discrete Math
CSE 30 - Programming Abstractions: Python
MATH 19B- Calculus
MATH 20B- Honors Calculus
PHYS 5A: Intro to Physics I
PHYS 5C: Intro to Physics III
