Petition to Take a Course Elsewhere Information

Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, and Biomolecular Engineering
  • Confirm that the course you’re planning to take is equivalent to a UCSC course. You can find the listed course equivalencies on assist.org

  • Send an email to the Biomolecular Engineering Undergraduate Directors, Kevin Karplus (karplus@ucsc.edu) and David Bernick (dbernick@ucsc.edu).  Your email should include the following: 

    • Subject Line: Course Substitution - YOUR STUDENT ID

    • Full name

    • Student ID

    • Major

    • Curriculum year you’ve been following

    • and Brief explanation of your request in the body of your email.

  • Professor Karplus will respond to your inquiry in 2 - 4 weeks. 

Computer Engineering, Network and Digital Technology, Electrical Engineering, Applied Math, Statistics, Computer Science Game Design, Robotics 
  • Confirm that the course you’re planning to take is equivalent to a UCSC course. You can find the listed course equivalencies on assist.org

  • Complete the Petition to Take a Course Elsewhere form linked here. Make sure to include your full name, ID, UCSC email, UCSC course you are replacing, and the name and number of the course you will be taking at a Community College. 

  • Email a PDF of the form to advising@soe.ucsc.edu. The subject line of the email should be, “Request to Take a Course Elsewhere - YOUR STUDENT ID.” 

  • Our office will email you the Department’s response to your petition in 2 - 4 weeks. 

Computer Science

Request to Take a Course Elsewhere Petition Process: 

  • Confirm that the course you’re planning to take is equivalent to a UCSC course. You can find the listed course equivalencies on assist.org

  • Complete a Computer Science Course Substitution Petition linked here

  • Send an email to csugraddir@soe.ucsc.edu with the subject line, “Course Substitution - YOUR STUDENT ID. Be sure that your email includes a PDF of your petition form and your full name. 

Technology and Information Management
  • Confirm that the course you’re planning to take is equivalent to a UCSC course. You can find the listed course equivalencies on assist.org

  • Complete the Petition to Take a Course Elsewhere form linked here. Make sure to include your full name, ID, UCSC email, UCSC course you are replacing, and the name and number of the course you will be taking at a Community College. 

  • Email a PDF of the form to the TIM Undergraduate Director, Subhas Desa, and CC the BSOE Adviser, Greta Hull. Their emails are sdesa@ucsc.edu and ghull@ucsc.edu, respectively. The subject line of the email should be, “Request to Take a Course Elsewhere - YOUR STUDENT ID.”

  • Professor Desa will email you a response to your petition in 2 - 4 weeks. 

For all major/minors!

Once you’ve passed the class, follow the steps below to transfer the course credit to UCSC:  

 

  • Send an email to advising@soe.ucsc.edu with the subject line, “Community College Transfer Credit - YOUR STUDENT ID.” You should attach your unofficial transcript from your CC in the email. 

  • Request that your Community College send your official transcripts to UCSC Office of the Registrar. You can find more detailed information about transferring credits here

 

If your summer course is a prerequisite to a UCSC class that you hope to take in the Fall, you will not be able to enroll in the Fall course until you’ve completed your CC class.
